6. Task 7. The story of the Mayflower

In 1620 the King of England was James I, but life was not easy in those days because there were religious problems.
A group of Puritans and Calvinists, who wanted to escape persecution, decided to cross the Atlantic Ocean and go to the new World,
America, in search of a land where they could live in peace.
This group of people are known as “The Pilgrim Fathers“ and the story of their incredible and courageous journey across the dangerous
and deep waters of the Atlantic, is still taught today as an example of strength, faith, and a desire for freedom.
The Mayflower is the name of the ship: a typical three-masted merchant ship, about 30 metres long.
The ship, under the command of Captain Jones, carried 102 passengers- the Pilgrims, two dogs, and about 25 sailors.
They left Plymouth, England on the morning of 6th September and they took sixty-five days to reach the coast of Massachussets, on 11th November.
Life on board was hard: there was no privacy because men and women were squeezed together in the same little space, and there were no comforts.
Three women were pregnant, but luckily the babies were born after the arrival in America. Water, except sea water, was limited.
Food was dried, and included salted meat, beans, peas and hardtack -a sort of cheap, dried biscuit.
William Bradford, one of the Pilgrims, wrote about some incidents in his diary: “During the storms the hard winds shake the Mayflower and we are afraid
that the ship cannot resist and sinks“.
The Mayflower did not sail very fast: only two miles an hour, and the ship encountered many terrible storms before the frightened Pilgrims, finally saw the land.
It was on November 9 that Captain Jones saw Cape Cod, Massachusetts and on November 11 that he dropped anchor in Provincetown Harbour.
The Pilgrims spent five weeks in this area, and made three exploring trips to find a good place to build their village.
Then they decided to sail again along the coast and, finally, on 15 December the Mayflower stopped at Plymouth Harbour.
The Pilgrims spent the winter on board of the ship, in the port, while they built their houses.
Forty-six passengers died during the winter because they had little food and it was very cold.
The Mayflower returned to England on 5 April, 1621, but all the Pilgrims stayed in the new land, and never returned to Europe.
Thanksgiving, one of the most important festivities of the Americans, celebrates the first harvest in 1621.
The pilgrims thanked God because they finally had some food.
Why did the Pilgrim Fathers decide to leave Europe in 1620?
[option1/] because they escaped from religious persecution
[option2/] because they wanted to visit America
[option3/] because lots of people went to the new continent in those days
[option4/] because they did not like King James
